While rooftop solar installations in Australia hit 3 GW in 2024, the report warns that an additional USD 3.6 trillion is needed by 2030 to stay on a net zero path. The report points to mature technologies like heat pumps and rooftop solar, but says the industry is stuck in pilot mode. Policymakers are urged to phase out fossil fuels and scale up investment to USD 592 billion annually. Without faster action, emissions locked in by materials like traditional cement will threaten 1.5 degree Celsius targets.

The investment gap number is huge but it needs to be broken down by region. Australia is doing well on rooftop solar but most of the new floor area is housing in developing countries. Different problem.

Heat pumps and solar are mature but payback periods vary a lot by climate and local energy prices. The report should have included more on retrofit rates for existing buildings, not just new floor area.
