Researchers at KAUST have developed Nescod, a cooling system that operates without compressors or continuous electrical power. The technology uses endothermic dissolution, combining ammonium nitrate and water to drop temperatures rapidly, with solar energy used to regenerate the materials for reuse. While not yet a replacement for full-scale air conditioning, this system offers a sustainable alternative for off-grid regions, medicine storage, and emergency cooling. It aims to reduce the massive energy demand and carbon emissions associated with traditional HVAC systems in extreme climates.
