NBS has released a cloud-based Lifecycle Carbon Assessment (LCA) tool to help construction professionals quantify the embodied carbon of building materials and systems. The platform replaces manual spreadsheets with a database of over 500 materials and 12,500 manufacturer-verified products. This tool aims to simplify carbon reporting for everyday projects in the UK, integrating data from the Inventory of Carbon and Energy (ICE) and the ECO Portal. It is designed to help design teams make low-carbon decisions early in the project lifecycle to meet upcoming UK regulatory requirements.

Glad to see a tool that moves away from spreadsheets. Most architects I know spend way too much time fighting with Excel just to get a rough carbon estimate. The real test will be if this actually changes material specs or if it just becomes another reporting box to tick.

The timing is the key here. With the UK government pushing the Carbon Budget and Growth Delivery Plan, the incentive is shifting from voluntary to mandatory. Better data tools are useless without a procurement rule that actually penalizes high carbon choices.

12,500 products with EPDs is a decent start, but how often is that data refreshed? Manufacturer data can be outdated quickly. I wonder if the platform flags when a product's carbon intensity has changed since the last audit.

That is a fair point. If the data is static, the reporting is just a snapshot. Still, having a centralized hub for ICE database values is better than everyone using different versions of a PDF from ten years ago.
