NBS and BDP have announced a long-term partnership to improve generic carbon data in construction. BDP developed over 1,300 pre-calculated generic assemblies for NBS's new life-cycle carbon assessment platform, NBS LCA. These assemblies cover common building fabric elements like walls, floors, and roofs, as well as concrete and steel structural elements. The goal is to give designers consistent, UK-relevant carbon benchmarks from the earliest stages of project design, removing the need to manually calculate individual components at the concept stage. The platform integrates carbon calculations with live design work and draws on data from Circular Ecology's ICE Database and over 12,500 verified construction products with Environmental Product Declarations. This collaboration aims to make carbon assessment more practical and accessible for UK construction professionals, especially as the UK government pushes for responsible carbon reporting through its Carbon Budget and Growth Delivery Plan. The partnership is set to continue developing to improve the quality and accessibility of carbon data across the industry.

This is actually useful. Too much construction carbon data is either generic global averages or requires a full LCA consultant. Pre-calculated assemblies for UK-specific walls and roofs could save a lot of time at concept stage.

The UK government's Carbon Budget and Growth Delivery Plan is driving this. Without policy pressure, most developers wouldn't bother with embodied carbon at concept stage. This tool only works if regulation makes it necessary.

Worth noting this is for new build, not retrofit. For existing buildings, you need measured data not generic assemblies. Different problem entirely.
