Summit sounds like a typical corporate panel. Shell sponsoring a nature based solutions talk while still pumping oil is a tough sell. Curious if they actually disclose how many credits they buy vs. direct emission cuts.

veritree is interesting though. They actually do verified restoration projects with monitoring. But the gap between a panel discussion and real tonne of CO2 sequestered is huge. Would like to see project level data.

Nature based solutions have a permanence problem. A forest can burn down or get logged. The carbon accounting for these is way less certain than a solar farm displacing gas. Still, if they fund real restoration it is better than nothing.

The EU is tightening rules on carbon credits from nature based projects. Additionality and leakage are the big questions. If Shell is using these to offset their own emissions, regulators will want proof the credits are real and not double counted.

I would rather see money go into industrial efficiency or heat pumps than tree planting. The payback on efficiency is faster and the carbon reduction is easier to measure. Nature based solutions feel like a distraction for oil majors.

Different tools for different problems. Nature based solutions can help with biodiversity and water too, not just carbon. But I agree the accounting needs to be rock solid or it is just greenwashing. Let us see what comes out of the summit.
