Companies are exploring the Canadian Shield and other regions in Saskatchewan, Quebec, and Nova Scotia to extract naturally occurring hydrogen. This geologic hydrogen could significantly undercut the cost of green hydrogen produced via electrolysis and traditional steam methane reforming. Proponents suggest natural hydrogen could cost between $0.50 and $1 per kilogram, offering a scalable way to decarbonize heavy industries like steel production, petroleum refining, and fertilizer manufacturing without the high energy requirements of electrolyzers.
