NATS, the UK air traffic control provider based in Hampshire, has committed GBP 500,000 to purchase high-integrity carbon removal credits. The investment is part of a GBP 2 million Advanced Market Signal led by the UK Sustainable Aviation coalition to kickstart the carbon removals market. NATS aims to reach net zero by 2035 and become carbon negative by 2040, with solar installations, fleet electrification, and natural gas phase-out already underway. The credits will be curated by CUR8, a carbon removals intelligence firm, and include technology-based solutions like direct air capture and waste-to-carbon aggregates. This marks one of the first corporate purchases under the Sustainable Aviation initiative, signaling demand for durable removals in hard-to-abate sectors. The move highlights how aviation companies are using carbon credits alongside operational cuts to meet climate targets.
