Czech scientists from Jan Evangelista Purkyne University are studying how the perennial grass removes pollutants like oil and explosives while rebuilding soil organic matter and storing carbon. The plant sends up to 40 percent of its organic material into the soil through its roots, which helps sequester carbon and supports microorganisms that break down contaminants. The project, part of NATO's Science for Peace and Security program, is running trials in Vorzel near Bucha, a Kyiv suburb that saw heavy fighting. Researchers say the grass can grow on degraded land, accumulate metals in its roots, and keep above-ground biomass clean for use as heating fuel. The goal is to restore Ukraine's chernozem soil for future farming while producing biomass and storing carbon over a 20 to 25 year cycle.
