National Co+op Grocers (NCG) said it has offset 2,083.54 metric tons of carbon since 2024 through a partnership with ReSeed. The offsets support the Curiau Afro Brazilian Social Carbon Project, a coastal wetland in Brazil managed by a Quilombola community of about 1,800 people. NCG previously offset more than 10,000 metric tons through a Peru forest project between 2012 and 2021. The emissions covered include staff air travel, gas mileage, travel to NCG conferences, event meals, office utility use, and estimated home office energy use. ReSeed works with smallholder farms in Brazil and aims to raise farmer incomes by 30 to 50 percent. NCG says the purchase is a paid service, not a donation, and helps it make credible climate claims as a Certified B Corp.

The emissions scope is narrow, staff flights, office energy, WFH estimates, not the full grocery supply chain. Still, it is one of the clearer retailer offset disclosures I have seen. The narrow scope matters. Offsetting office travel and WFH energy is not the same as offsetting the co-ops' actual operations. Also, the 2,083.54 ton figure looks precise, but precision is not verification. Would like to know which standard the ReSeed credits carry and whether they are ex post or ex ante. That determines if the claim holds up.

If they really want regenerative growth, pair the credits with efficiency work in stores and warehouses. That is where the bigger reductions are.
