NAPCOR roadmap: PET bottle life-cycle emissions could fall 57% by 2050 via lightweighting, rPET
packagingdive.comNAPCOR, the US trade group for PET containers, released a roadmap aiming to cut life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions from PET bottle production 57% per 1,000 gallons of beverage consumed by 2050. Even with production growth, total annual emissions could fall 42%. The main levers are lightweighting, more recycled PET, and manufacturing energy efficiency, all technologies the report says are available now. The roadmap comes at a rough time for recycled PET. US reclaimers have lost an estimated 25% of capacity, bottle recovery volumes dropped 89 million pounds from 2022 to 2024, and tariffs and resin supply disruptions are squeezing markets. NAPCOR acknowledges adoption will be nonlinear and says policy, investment, and better collection systems are needed to hit the recycled content goals.
