Researchers from Nagaland University and international partners have developed a biochar-based solution to combat soil degradation in hilly farming regions. By converting agricultural waste into carbon-rich biochar, the study demonstrates improved soil moisture retention and reduced reliance on chemical fertilizers. This nature-based approach focuses on long-term carbon storage in the soil and increased climate resilience for small-scale farmers. The team is now moving toward pilot demonstrations in village clusters and horticultural plantations to scale the impact.
