Nadorcott mandarin growers release 12-season carbon inventory: 1.33 Mt net CO2 sequestered
fruitnet.comSpanish Nadorcott mandarin growers, coordinated by CVVP, published the first greenhouse gas inventory for an entire citrus variety. The study covers around 9,000 hectares of Nadorcott orchards in Spain across 12 seasons, from 2013/14 to 2024/25, using grower surveys and georeferenced plots. It reports a net sequestration of 1.33 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, with 2.6 million tonnes removed and 1.27 million tonnes emitted over that period. The inventory follows the GHG Protocol, with scientific support from the Valencian Institute of Agricultural Research, external verification under ISO 14064-3, and certification by Aenor. The scope is limited to the agricultural system and excludes transport, packaging, and distribution. It does not claim carbon neutrality or generate offsets. Nitrogen fertilisation remains the largest source of emissions, and the growers say they will keep measuring season after season. Retailers can access the methodology and verification details through a QR code on the new NCTT Spain label. For anyone tracking agricultural carbon claims, the value here is the audited baseline and the clear statement of what the data does and does not cover.
