National Australia Bank has completed its largest single purchase of Australian carbon credits, buying roughly 150,000 units from Arnhem Land Fire Abatement NT (ALFA NT) in a five year deal. The credits are Australian Carbon Credit Units generated through planned early dry season burning that prevents more intense wildfires later in the year. The agreement covers a significant portion of NAB's residual operational emissions through 2031 and reduces its reliance on the annual spot market. ALFA NT is a First Nations owned nonprofit that manages six fire management projects across Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. All revenue from credit sales goes back into land management and cultural programs, employing over 300 Indigenous Rangers. The deal follows federal reforms to the Safeguard Mechanism and new savanna fire methodologies introduced in April 2026. It shows how long term procurement contracts are starting to replace spot buying in Australia's carbon market.
