N.C. peatland restoration project aims to cut CO2 emissions and sell verified carbon credits
arkansasonline.comPantheon Regeneration is working to restore drained peatlands in North Carolina's Inner Banks. The company plans to block 50 miles of old agricultural ditches, rewet the site, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 130,000 tons per year. The project is one of several efforts to bring back pocosin peatlands along the Eastern Seaboard. Restoration work includes removing invasive species, replanting native vegetation, and using carbon credit sales to fund land purchases and future projects. Microsoft is among the early investors. Pantheon says credits will be verified by an outside third party, a key point given past concerns about offset quality. Peatlands store a large share of the world's soil carbon, but degraded sites become emitters. This project is a useful example of how carbon finance could support large scale wetland restoration, though the long term water table management and verification details will matter.
