Mysuru has completed a citizen-led tree census counting 121,789 trees across all 65 wards. The Nammara Tree Census used over 520 volunteers and a custom data platform called AMARA to record GPS coordinates, species, tree health, and girth. A final scientific report in August 2026 will include canopy cover estimates and carbon sequestration numbers. The census was organized by Mysore Grahakara Parishat, CFAL Research Centre, and Bherunda Foundation, with support from the city corporation. It builds on Mysuru's history as a planned green city. The data is meant to help urban planning, conservation, and future tree planting efforts. For carbon markets and climate folks, this is a solid example of urban carbon stock measurement at scale. The August report will be worth watching for actual sequestration numbers and species breakdowns that could inform similar projects in other Indian cities.
