MVRDV's Rotterdam Rocks Project: A 240 Million Euro Low-Carbon Landmark on the Maas River
freeyork.orgMVRDV has won the design competition for the Shift Embassy in Rotterdam with a 240 million euro project called Rotterdam Rocks. The building will feature seven stacked rock-like volumes with terraces, a living facade with habitats for local fauna, and low-carbon construction techniques. It includes a 200-room hotel, conference spaces, education areas, and a food court. The design integrates real-time monitoring of energy use, biodiversity levels, and water cycles as part of the visitor experience. The project is part of the Waterkant district development, which will eventually include over 3,750 homes. MVRDV aims to demonstrate how architecture can reduce carbon footprints while creating a vibrant cultural destination on the south bank of the Maas River.
