Mumbai's BMC earmarks Rs 280 crore for energy efficiency retrofit of civic buildings, starting with hospitals
daijiworld.comThe Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has unveiled a Rs 280 crore plan to cut electricity consumption across its 630+ buildings. The first phase targets nine municipal structures, with BYL Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central as the pilot. Measures include LED retrofits with daylight sensors, efficient AC systems, automated controls, rooftop solar, and green power procurement for high-demand facilities like hospitals. BMC properties account for about 19% of the city's total civic electricity use, with hospitals alone consuming 9.8%. The initiative is developed with C40 Cities and the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE). For new construction, the plan calls for building orientation, sun shading, and greener materials like fly-ash bricks and recycled steel. Funding options include an internal climate budget and municipal green bonds. The city aims for net-zero carbon emissions from all new civic buildings by 2050.
