A new 13.3 km bypass on the Mumbai-Pune corridor, called the Missing Link, is saving commercial truck operators an estimated 2.7 crore litres of fuel per year, worth about ₹272 crore. The reduction comes because cars and buses now use the new link, leaving the old Khandala Ghat road less congested for heavy vehicles. Intangles, a fleet analytics firm, tracked over 1,800 trucks and found that medium trucks gained 18% in speed and 17% in fuel efficiency, while buses saved 24% on fuel per trip. The project also avoids 64,905 tonnes of CO2 annually. Trucks are still barred from the new link, but the reduced traffic on the old ghat means fewer interruptions that force them to slow down and burn extra fuel climbing steep gradients. Drivers can now fit in nearly one extra round trip per day, which is significant in a market where trucks average only 250 km daily. The smoother running also reduces wear on tires and engines, though those savings are not yet quantified. The data comes from real sensors measuring fuel flow, not models, making the estimates more reliable.
