Mumbai environmentalists launch climate action plan with blue carbon credit bank on World Environment Day
timesofindia.indiatimes.comOn World Environment Day, citizen groups across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region launched Climate Action Now (CAN), a mobilization plan targeting green cover loss, wetland destruction, and rising sea levels. A key proposal is the creation of a Flamingo Blue Carbon Urban Complex that would transform mangroves, wetlands, and mudflats into a revenue-generating ecological system. The plan includes establishing a dedicated Blue Carbon Credit Bank where polluting sectors like cement, aviation, and shipping could purchase certified credits linked to protected MMR ecosystems. Revenue would fund mangrove protection, wetland restoration, flood mitigation, and climate resilience infrastructure across the region.
