MSF upgraded the solar system at Mudug Regional Hospital in Galkayo, Somalia, adding panels and battery storage to replace diesel generators as the main power source. In three months the system prevented the use of 35,000 liters of diesel, cutting emissions and lowering operating costs. Diesel now serves only as backup for emergencies or peak demand. The shift supports MSF's goal to halve its carbon emissions by 2030 compared to 2019. The hospital treats patients affected by climate-driven droughts and floods, so reducing its own carbon footprint matters directly. Staff report quieter wards, steadier power for medical equipment, and fewer fuel deliveries on difficult roads. This is a practical example of how humanitarian organizations can decarbonize operations in climate-vulnerable regions. The project shows that solar with battery storage can work reliably in off-grid settings, reducing both emissions and logistical risk.
