MSC Group's Cruise Division says it reached the International Maritime Organization's 2030 carbon intensity reduction target by 2025, five years ahead of schedule. The company credits shore power connections at ports, over 9,800 tons of renewable fuel use, and the addition of LNG-powered ships like MSC World America for the early milestone. The fleet also generated 84% of its freshwater onboard and operates a marine conservation facility at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Environmental groups note that the metric measures carbon intensity per passenger, not total emissions. As cruise fleets expand with larger ships, absolute emissions can still rise even if individual vessels become more efficient. Beating a 2030 target by five years is notable, but the article points out it is intensity per passenger. If they keep adding ships, absolute emissions could still go up. Would like to see the actual tonnage numbers.

217 shore power connections is a decent number, but depends on how many ports actually have the infrastructure. A lot of terminals still lack high-voltage shore power. Would be useful to know what share of total port calls that represents.

9,800 tons of renewable fuel sounds small relative to the fleet's total bunker consumption. Renewable fuels are still expensive and scarce. The real story might be how much they relied on LNG, which is cleaner but still fossil gas.

LNG reduces sulfur and particulates but methane slip is a real concern for the warming impact. The IMO target is about carbon intensity, not full lifecycle. If they are serious about net zero, they will need to move beyond LNG to e-fuels or hydrogen.

Freshwater generation onboard is smart for local water stress, but desalination takes energy. Would be curious if that energy comes from the same fuel mix or if they have any onboard solar or waste heat recovery.
