MSC Group reports that its cruise brands, MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, have met the International Maritime Organization 2030 carbon intensity reduction goals five years ahead of schedule. The company achieved this through a combination of LNG-powered vessels, renewable fuel use, and expanded shore power capabilities at ports. As part of its path toward net-zero emissions by 2050, MSC is committing to dual-fuel engine technology for all future newbuild ships. The 2025 sustainability report also highlights a reduction of over 48,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and an increase in onboard freshwater production to reduce local environmental impact.

Hitting the IMO 2030 target early is a good headline, but I want to see the actual carbon intensity indicator numbers. There is a big difference between efficiency per ship and total fleet emissions, especially if the fleet is growing.

Exactly. 217 shore power connections is a start, but the real bottleneck is the port grid capacity. If the terminals in Miami and Barcelona cannot handle the peak load of multiple ships plugging in, the ships just keep idling their engines.

They mentioned 9,800 tonnes of renewable fuels. In the context of a global cruise fleet, that is a tiny fraction of total fuel consumption. It is a proof of concept, but not a systemic shift yet.

Dual fuel is the standard play now, but the real cost is in the retrofit or the fuel supply chain. Who is actually producing the green methanol or ammonia at scale to make those engines useful for more than a few trips?
