Mountain West electricity carbon intensity rankings: Wyoming third, Idaho 46th, and why generation location matters
aspenpublicradio.orgNew EIA data shows a wide gap in carbon intensity of electricity generation across Mountain West states. Wyoming ranks third nationally, Utah eighth, Montana 14th, Colorado 16th, while Idaho ranks 46th thanks to heavy hydropower. The data measures generation, not consumption, so states like Wyoming carry emissions for power exported to neighbors. The region has shifted significantly since 2005, with U.S. power sector emissions down about 40% as coal plants close and gas and renewables take over. Even in coal country, economics are pushing coal off the grid. The trend is expected to continue, with all states except Idaho, Oregon and Washington seeing lower carbon intensity since 1990.
