Morgan Sindall has completed the Portfield School in Haverfordwest, a 2,600 sq ft special educational needs school designed to be carbon net-zero in operation. The single-storey building uses a steel frame with brickwork and Vieo cladding, and achieves operational net-zero through its fabric, rooftop solar panels, air-source heat pumps, and low-energy light fittings. The contractor also applied its internal 10 Tonne Carbon Challenge on the construction phase, saving 11.2 tonnes of CO2 equivalent so far using its own carbon assessment tool, CarboniCa. The project was procured through the South West Wales Regional Contractors Framework with AtkinsRéalis as engineering consultant. Morgan Sindall reported that 95% of the supply chain budget was spent locally and 86% of subcontractors came from the local area. The school includes therapy rooms, sensory rooms, and a main hall with a retractable trampoline. A second phase due in early 2027 will add a new respite block and remodel the SEN sixth form facilities.

Nice to see a school built for net-zero operation from the start. The 10 Tonne Challenge is interesting but 11.2 tonnes saved is tiny in absolute terms. Would be good to know the total embodied carbon of the build.

Agreed. 11.2 tonnes is a rounding error on a 25m project. The real story is the fabric efficiency and heat pumps. If the envelope is tight enough, operational energy should be very low. Would like to see the actual EPC or design SAP rating.

Heat pumps and solar are standard now for new builds aiming for net-zero. The question is what happens on a cold, overcast week in January. Does the solar plus heat pump setup actually cover the load, or is it relying on grid imports and offsets?

Net-zero in operation usually means the building generates enough renewable energy on site to match its annual consumption. Grid import is fine as long as export balances it over the year. The article doesn't confirm if they are actually doing that or just buying offsets.

Worth noting they used CarboniCa for design phase carbon estimates. That tool is contractor-specific. Would be interesting to see how it compares to standard LCA tools like One Click LCA. Transparency on methodology matters.

The local spend numbers are solid. 95% local supply chain and 86% local subcontractors is a real impact for the area. That kind of thing often gets overlooked next to the carbon metrics.
