Momentum Party Proposes Phasing Out Malta's Energy and Water Subsidies for Luxury Sectors
timesofmalta.comMalta's Momentum party has called for a phase-out of energy and water subsidies for commercial tourist accommodation and luxury users, while keeping full support for essential household use and small businesses. The proposal would apply standard rates to excessive consumption, and make superyachts, private jets and luxury leisure craft pay full carbon and environmental taxes plus normal fuel excise duty. The party also wants a tiered fee on commercial groundwater extraction by construction, brick manufacturing, bottling plants, hotels and water bowser operators, with farmers exempt. Revenue would go into a ring-fenced Aquifer Restoration and Rainwater Harvesting Fund. Savings from subsidy reform would be reinvested in solar installations on government buildings, schools and industrial parks, battery storage grants for households and businesses, and community energy schemes. The plan targets the gap between protecting basic needs and letting large commercial users benefit from public subsidies. Its practical impact will depend on how the phase-out is implemented and how the reinvestment is managed.
