MODEC and Eld Energy Pass Key ABS Qualification Stage for SOFC Power on FPSOs
brazilenergyinsight.comMODEC and Eld Energy have completed the Technology Feasibility and Concept Verification stage of ABS's New Technology Qualification process for Eld's 40kW solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) module. The unit is designed to run on gas produced aboard FPSOs, with plans to test it on an operating offshore vessel. The companies aim to scale the technology to 120kW with carbon capture integration and eventually to multi-megawatt systems. SOFCs can generate power at up to 70% efficiency, which could cut fuel use and emissions on offshore oil and gas platforms. The offshore pilot will show how the system holds up with real produced gas under marine conditions. Results are expected to guide further development and certification.
