MODEC and Eld Energy have signed an MOU to develop a 1.2MW power system combining solid oxide fuel cells with carbon capture for use on floating production, storage and offloading vessels. Eld Energy will lead design, procurement, and construction of the SOFC-based system, including testing and validation. The goal is to reduce emissions from offshore oil and gas operations by integrating power generation with onboard carbon capture. This partnership targets the marine energy sector, where FPSOs typically rely on gas turbines for power. Replacing those with SOFCs could cut CO2 at the source and make capture more feasible due to higher exhaust CO2 concentration. The project is still in early development under an MOU, so timelines and commercial deployment details remain unclear. If successful, it could set a precedent for low-carbon power on offshore production units.
