MODEC and Eld Energy have signed an MOU to develop a 1.2 MW power system using solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with integrated carbon capture for Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessels. The system aims to reduce emissions from offshore oil and gas operations without sacrificing uptime. Onshore testing is scheduled for 2029, followed by a long-term demonstration. The partnership builds on earlier work scaling SOFC technology from 40 kW to 120 kW with carbon capture. If successful, this could provide a practical pathway for deep decarbonization of offshore power, a sector where emissions are hard to abate. The project targets real-world deployment rather than just lab trials, which is a key step for industrial adoption.
