MODEC and Eld Energy Partner on CCS-Integrated Fuel Cell Power System for FPSOs

MODEC and Norway's Eld Energy signed an MOU to develop a 1.2 MW solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power system with integrated carbon capture for future FPSO vessels. Eld Energy handles design and construction of the SOFC system, while MODEC leads the carbon capture integration. The companies aim for onshore testing of the full unit by 2029, followed by a long-term offshore demonstration. This builds on prior work that scaled from a 40 kW system to a 120 kW pilot with CCS. SOFCs generate electricity from multiple fuel types at high temperatures, and pairing them with carbon capture could cut emissions from offshore power generation. The project is still early stage, but it shows a concrete pathway for reducing the carbon footprint of FPSO operations without relying on grid connections or full electrification.
