MODEC and Eld Energy partner on 1.2 MW SOFC system with carbon capture for FPSO vessels
carbonherald.comMODEC and Eld Energy signed an MoU to jointly develop a 1.2 MW solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system with integrated carbon capture, targeting deployment on floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels. Eld Energy will design and build the SOFC unit, while MODEC handles the carbon capture facility and integration. Onshore testing of the system is planned for 2029, followed by a long-term demonstration. The partnership builds on earlier work with smaller 40 kW and 120 kW SOFC units and pilot carbon capture projects. SOFC technology generates electricity through a high-temperature electrochemical process and can run on multiple fuels. When paired with carbon capture, the system aims to cut operational emissions from offshore oil and gas production while maintaining reliable power supply. The project represents a step toward commercial-scale zero-emission FPSOs. It addresses growing pressure on the offshore sector to lower emissions without sacrificing performance. If the demonstration succeeds, the combined SOFC and carbon capture setup could offer a scalable path for decarbonizing offshore energy production.
