MODEC and Eld Energy Partner on 1.2 MW SOFC Power System with Carbon Capture for Zero-Emission FPSOs
chemanalyst.comMODEC and Eld Energy have signed an MoU to develop a 1.2 MW solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power system integrated with carbon capture for use on floating production, storage, and offloading vessels (FPSOs). The system aims to reduce emissions from offshore oil and gas operations, building on earlier pilot projects with 40 kW and 120 kW units. Onshore testing is planned for 2029, followed by a long-term demonstration phase. Eld Energy will lead design, procurement, and construction of the SOFC system, while MODEC will handle carbon capture integration and vessel deployment. SOFCs convert chemical energy directly to electricity without combustion, offering high efficiency and fuel flexibility. Combined with carbon capture, the technology could provide a practical path to lower emissions from offshore power generation without sacrificing reliability. The partnership extends a collaboration that began in 2025. If successful, the 1.2 MW system could demonstrate scalability for zero-emission FPSOs, supporting broader decarbonization of offshore energy infrastructure.
