MODEC and Eld Energy signed an MoU to develop a 1.2 MW power system using solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with integrated carbon capture for floating production, storage, and offloading vessels (FPSOs). The system aims to demonstrate scalable, low-emission offshore power without sacrificing uptime. Onshore testing is planned for 2029, followed by a long-term demonstration. This collaboration builds on earlier work scaling SOFC plus carbon capture from 40 kW to 120 kW pilots. 1.2 MW is tiny for an FPSO. This is more proof of concept than real power. Onshore test in 2029 means we are years away from any actual deployment.

The step from 120 kW pilot to 1.2 MW is a 10x scale. That is ambitious. If the fuel flexibility claim holds, it could sidestep fuel switching headaches. But the timeline is long.

Offshore carbon capture is expensive. Without a carbon price or subsidy, this stays a demo. Norway has the policy tools to make it work, but will they apply them here?
