Japan's MODEC and Norway's Eld Energy signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a 1.2 MW power system for floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs). The system uses solid oxide fuel cells combined with carbon capture to produce zero-emission offshore power. Onshore testing is planned for 2029, followed by a long-term demonstration at sea. The companies have worked together since 2025, scaling from a 40 kW pilot to a 120 kW test. This next phase aims to prove that the technology can scale commercially. MODEC says the approach offers deep decarbonization for FPSO operations without sacrificing reliability, while Eld Energy leads fuel cell design and integration.

1.2 MW is a pilot scale. What matters is whether they can hit multi megawatt range and keep capture efficiency high under real offshore conditions. Salt air and motion are brutal on hardware.
