MODEC advances SOFC power for FPSOs with ABS and DNV approvals, targeting 60% electrical efficiency
energyconnects.comMODEC has moved its solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system for offshore floating production units past key feasibility checks. The 40kW pilot passed ABS New Technology Qualification milestones and earned approval in principle from DNV, which clears a path toward installation on an FPSO for real-world testing. The system is designed to run on produced gas and alternative fuels, with a stated electrical efficiency target above 60% and potential gains up to 70% when paired with fuel recovery and carbon management. Next steps include installing the pilot on an FPSO, scaling to a 120kW module, and eventually pursuing multi-megawatt configurations. The company says a full-scale 100MW installation with carbon capture is on the concept roadmap. For project developers and financiers, the class society sign-offs matter because they reduce technology risk before sea trials and full operational deployment.
