The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) has been granted official non-government consultative status by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This gives the non-profit a formal seat at the table in IMO committees and working groups focused on greenhouse gas reduction, fuel certification, life-cycle assessment, and ammonia safety. The move allows MMMCZCS to provide technical input and policy recommendations as the IMO develops global shipping decarbonization regulations. MMMCZCS has already been involved in practical projects including a ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering demonstration in the Port of Rotterdam and the design of an ammonia-capable container vessel. The organization also studied converting an 82,000-dwt bulk carrier to dual-fuel methanol operation. With consultative status, it can now directly influence the regulatory framework for low- and zero-emission fuels in shipping.
