MMCM's Cercarbono-Approved ELV Methodology Turns Scrapped Vehicles in India into Carbon Credits
pnndigital.comIndia's end-of-life vehicle stream is growing fast, from about 10 million ELVs in 2020 to a projected 23 million by 2025 and 50 million by 2030. MMCM's CM-WM-ELV-01 methodology, approved under Cercarbono, treats material recovery from scrapped vehicles as a carbon-crediting activity. Instead of crediting the act of scrapping, it measures emission reductions from using recovered metals and plastics in place of virgin production. The methodology is being submitted for ICVCM assessment after Cercarbono became CCP-eligible in August 2026. India's formal scrapping network is still small, with 129 registered facilities processing about 0.43 million vehicles as of January 2026. Carbon finance could add an incentive for that infrastructure to expand, but the credit math depends on transparent baselines and verification of actual recycling.
