Mitsubishi Fuso achieves carbon neutrality at all Japan manufacturing plants in 2025 using renewables and carbon credits

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp announced on July 17 that all four of its domestic manufacturing sites in Japan reached carbon neutrality in 2025. The company cut emissions by switching to renewable electricity, installing on-site solar panels across about 14,000 square meters at the Kawasaki plant, and implementing energy-saving measures in production processes. For residual emissions that could not be eliminated, Mitsubishi Fuso purchased certified carbon credits to offset them on a balance-sheet basis. The achievement covers the Kawasaki and Nakatsu plants in Kanagawa Prefecture, Mitsubishi Fuso Bus Manufacturing in Toyama Prefecture, and body builder Pabco in Ebina. The company plans to maintain carbon neutrality from April 2026 onward through continued CO2 reduction efforts. Mitsubishi Fuso is part of the ARCHION group and is also developing zero-emission vehicles alongside its production decarbonization work. Its Tramagal plant in Portugal has also achieved carbon neutrality.

Good to see a truck maker actually hitting carbon neutrality at multiple plants. The combination of renewables, solar, and credits is standard approach but still requires execution. Would like to know what kind of credits they used and if any are from Japan's J-Credit scheme.

The 14,000 square meters of solar at Kawasaki is decent but not huge for a manufacturing site. They shifted to renewable electricity procurement too. The real question is how much of the offset is actual reduction vs credits. Article says balance sheet basis, which usually means credits do heavy lifting.

Balance sheet carbon neutrality is common in Japan right now because the J-Credit market is still developing. Companies use international credits to fill gaps. The key is whether they maintain the reductions after April 2026 without relying on offsets. The Tramagal plant in Portugal also hit neutrality, so they have a template.

ISO 50001 certification is a good sign for energy management rigor. That standard forces continuous improvement in energy performance. If they maintain it, the reductions should get deeper over time.
