Mitsubishi Electric has created a new system to estimate soil organic carbon (SOC) using optical measurements and simulation models. By combining aerial remote sensing with root biomass and microbial decomposition data, the technology removes the need for expensive and time consuming physical soil sampling and lab analysis. This technology is designed to support Japan's GX Emissions Trading Scheme (GX-ETS) by providing verifiable data for monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of carbon reductions in agriculture. Mitsubishi plans to expand testing across various land types globally to support 2050 carbon neutrality goals.
