Mitsubishi Electric and VTT develop direct ocean capture system for CO2 removal from seawater

The acidification-based electrochemical process leverages the ocean's natural ability to absorb atmospheric CO2, with seawater containing roughly 140 times more CO2 per unit volume than air. This approach allows for both carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) applications, including synthetic fuels and industrial feedstocks. The companies aim to integrate the DOC system with existing large-scale seawater infrastructure such as desalination plants and power plants to reduce capital costs and enable scalable deployment. They are also developing technologies to extract valuable resources from seawater during the CO2 recovery process to create additional revenue streams. Next steps include coastal field demonstrations and seeking partners for commercialization.
