These modes account for over one-tenth of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions and are difficult to electrify due to battery energy density limits and infrastructure constraints. The study will assess biofuels from feedstocks like agricultural residues and energy crops, as well as e-fuels produced using low-carbon electricity and captured carbon dioxide. Researchers will evaluate cost, lifecycle emissions, scalability, and technology readiness for each pathway, with a focus on drop-in fuels that work with existing engines and infrastructure. A public report is expected in 2028.

E fuels always sound great on paper but the round trip efficiency is terrible. You need massive amounts of low carbon power. That power could decarbonize the grid first. The study should compare opportunity costs.

Good point. But for aviation there is no battery alternative. So e fuels or biofuels are the only shots. The study scope includes lifecycle emissions so hopefully they account for the full energy input.
