MIT study examines sustainable fuels for aviation, shipping, trucking, and rail decarbonization
energy.mit.eduThe MIT Energy Initiative has launched a two-year study on sustainable fuel options for hard-to-decarbonize transportation sectors, including aviation, international shipping, long-haul trucking, and freight rail. These modes account for over one-tenth of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions and are difficult to electrify due to battery energy density limits and infrastructure constraints. The study will assess biofuels from feedstocks like agricultural residues and energy crops, as well as e-fuels produced using low-carbon electricity and captured carbon dioxide. Researchers will evaluate cost, lifecycle emissions, scalability, and technology readiness for each pathway, with a focus on drop-in fuels that work with existing engines and infrastructure. A public report is expected in 2028.
