The team tested a new class of sorbents called N-heterocyclic imines (NHIs) that can separate CO2 without needing highly reducing potentials, which have limited the performance of earlier electrochemical approaches. The initial results show that a bis(NHI) structure can modulate two CO2 molecules per electron during operation. Further molecular engineering could allow these sorbents to work in more diverse electrolyte environments, improving electron efficiency and operational flexibility. The researchers emphasize that understanding degradation pathways will be key to designing durable molecules for real world deployment.
