MIT machine learning model doubles accuracy of 2 to 6 week weather forecasts for energy and emergency planning
energy.mit.eduMIT researchers and partners developed a machine learning wrapper that corrects errors in existing weather models, doubling forecast accuracy in the two to six week range. That window, often called the predictability desert, is where short term forecasts lose skill and long term climate patterns are not yet dominant. The method beat climatology averages in an ECMWF competition and improved extreme weather predictions, a first for subseasonal forecasting. For energy operators, farmers, and emergency planners, two weeks of extra lead time changes how they prepare. The Texas 2021 winter storm example shows what happens when warnings come too late. The model is open source and runs without a supercomputer, and Kenya's meteorological office is already testing it for monsoon forecasting.
