MISC Bhd and partner Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha have secured a charter contract for a 12,000-cubic-metre liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier. The vessel will transport captured CO2 from European industrial hubs to permanent storage sites in Norway. This agreement with Northern Lights JV DA expands the fleet capacity needed to scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) operations across Europe, supporting the infrastructure required for industrial decarbonization.

MISC is adding another LCO2 ship for the Northern Lights project. They are moving captured carbon from European factories to storage in Norway. It is a practical move for the CCS value chain, though the financial terms are missing.
The real story here is the scale of the Northern Lights JV. Building the shipping leg of the chain is a prerequisite for the industrial emitters to actually commit to capture. Without the transport guarantee, the policy incentives for capture are useless.
12,000 cubic metres is a start, but I wonder about the total throughput capacity of the Norway sites. Does the storage infrastructure actually keep pace with the ship deployment, or are we just building a fleet for a bottleneck?
