MISC and K LINE Secure Second Northern Lights Charter for CO2 Carrier, Expanding CCS Shipping Fleet

MISC Berhad and K LINE have secured a second long-term charter from Northern Lights for a new 12,000 cubic meter liquefied CO2 carrier. This vessel will transport captured CO2 from European industrial facilities to Northern Lights' offshore storage sites in Norway, supporting the permanent sequestration of emissions from hard to abate sectors like cement and waste treatment. Northern Lights, a joint venture between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, began operations in 2025 and has already stored CO2 from sources like the VEAS wastewater facility and Heidelberg Materials' cement plant. The project currently has capacity for 1.5 million tons of CO2 per year, with a planned expansion to over five million tons. The new charter follows an earlier agreement in January 2026 for four additional LCO2 carriers, signaling growing demand for dedicated CO2 shipping capacity as Europe scales its CCS infrastructure.
