Mine tailings database could cut cement carbon footprint by enabling geopolymer concrete feedstocks
azom.comResearchers at Murdoch University have proposed a data-driven framework to catalog critical mineral tailings for use in low-carbon geopolymer concrete. The database would map tailings composition, location, and processing history to identify which waste streams can replace ordinary Portland cement, which accounts for 7-8% of global emissions. Western Australia alone hosts over 1,000 tailings storage facilities, with more than 50 potentially suitable for geopolymer production. The framework combines geospatial data, chemical and mineralogical characterization, and performance metrics like strength and durability. It aims to connect mining operations with concrete producers, reducing both waste storage risks and cement-related CO2 emissions. The paper was presented at the World Renewable Energy Congress 2026 and highlights a practical path to circular materials systems in two carbon-intensive sectors.
