Minderoo and Blue Nature Alliance Launch $10M Marine 30x30 Finance Initiative for Ocean Conservation
esgnews.earthThe Minderoo Foundation and Blue Nature Alliance have launched a $10 million Marine 30x30 Finance Initiative to help countries fund the conservation of 30% of their ocean areas by 2030. The initiative will work with Seychelles, French Polynesia, and the Dominican Republic to develop national ocean finance strategies using tools like tourism levies and blue carbon mechanisms. This addresses a key funding gap that has slowed progress on marine protected areas despite global commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework. The pilot countries will create cost models and financial plans that align conservation with economic priorities. Seychelles, a leader in blue finance, aims to secure sustained funding for its MPA network. The Dominican Republic is exploring blue carbon, parametric insurance, and blended finance. French Polynesia, with the world's largest MPA, is considering a conservation trust fund. A Community of Practice will also share lessons globally to scale marine finance expertise.
