Midsummer and Chulalongkorn University launch carbon-negative solar bus shelter in Bangkok
azocleantech.comSwedish solar firm Midsummer AB, through its Thai subsidiary Midsummer Siam, has partnered with Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Architecture to build what they call the world's first carbon-negative bus shelter in Bangkok. The shelter uses engineered wood as a long-term carbon sink and integrates lightweight thin-film CIGS solar panels from Midsummer to power lighting, fans, mobile charging, and digital traffic displays. The project is designed as a research and demonstration platform for climate-positive public infrastructure in tropical urban environments. The collaboration is formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding covering building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), low-carbon construction systems, and academic training. The bus shelter prototype is located in front of the Faculty of Architecture and is intended to explore how distributed solar generation can be embedded directly into public infrastructure rather than added on afterward. The project also involves the Embassy of Sweden and the Embassy of Japan in Bangkok. Midsummer's thin-film panels are lightweight and flexible, making them suitable for roofs and surfaces where conventional glass-and-frame solar panels are too heavy or awkward to install. The company says this opens up new possibilities for dense tropical cities looking to integrate renewable energy into existing and new infrastructure without major structural changes.
