Microsoft has signed an agreement with BioCirc to purchase 650,000 metric tons of carbon removal credits. The deal involves capturing carbon dioxide from biogas projects and storing it in offshore reservoirs, signaling that the company is still investing in carbon removal despite rising emissions from its AI data centers. While the deal prevents a total market freeze, the volume is smaller than previous years. This creates a gap between Microsoft's long term carbon negative pledges and the actual physical delivery of removals needed to offset its growing energy footprint by 2030.
