Microsoft has signed a seven year agreement with BioCirc to purchase up to 650,000 tons of carbon removal credits. The deal utilizes Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) at five biogas plants in Denmark, with the captured CO2 stored in geologic formations under the North Sea. This move follows reports that Microsoft had paused its carbon removal procurement. Given that Microsoft has historically represented a massive portion of the global carbon removal market, its procurement strategy significantly impacts the scaling of durable removal technologies.
