Microsoft has signed a contract to purchase 650,000 metric tons of carbon removal credits from BioCirc. The deal uses biogas plants to capture carbon dioxide from agricultural waste and store it in seabed reservoirs, countering rumors that the company had paused its carbon removal procurement. Despite these efforts, Microsoft faces challenges reaching its 2030 carbon-negative goal. The energy demands of AI are driving the company to build new natural gas power plants, which may offset the emissions reductions gained from smaller carbon removal contracts.
